When I start a storytime session I choose about 8 – 10 songs and rhymes I’d like to feature as my “core” group for the 10 – 12 weeks. They learn sentence structure and vocabulary words when they hear a song again and again. To me, what you sing at storytime is far less important than how often you sing it. Here are some strategies I’ve learned when it comes to the “how” questions. It fosters a sense of belonging and connectedness, one of my storytime goals. Lastly, singing as a group is a great way to build a sense of community and friendship among your community members. Fingerplays in particular help children strengthen their finger muscles which they need to hold a pen or turn the page of a book. Many songs have hand or body movements that accompany them offering kids a chance to be active participants using their bodies. They also break down language into smaller parts, called phonological awareness, which allows kids to hear the smaller sounds in words as they learn to speak. Songs and rhymes boost memory as children absorb new vocabulary and learn how to follow directions. Not only are songs fun, but they also serve as a learning tool for children as they reinforce early childhood concepts. Singing and rhyming are an important early literacy component of storytime. It’s important to remember that everybody does things differently and that’s okay! Finding what works for you is part of your development as a storytime presenter. Poe arrived at this conclusion after approximately 90 pages of reasoning but employed no mathematics. This is the first known instance of suggesting space and time to be different perceptions of one thing. Literary background Įdgar Allan Poe wrote an essay on cosmology titled Eureka (1848) which said that "space and duration are one". The 1926 thirteenth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica included an article by Einstein titled "space-time". Einstein discovered that the curvature in his 4-dimensional space-time representation was actually the cause of gravity. In general relativity, Einstein generalized Minkowski space-time to include the effects of acceleration. It was Einstein, though, who discovered the curvature of space-time ( gravity) in general relativity. Minkowski spacetime is only accurate at describing constant velocity. He hoped this new idea would clarify the theory of special relativity. His concept of Minkowski space is the earliest treatment of space and time as two aspects of a unified whole, which is the essence of special relativity. However, it was Einstein's teacher, Hermann Minkowski, who suggested space-time, in a 1908 essay. Many people link space-time with Albert Einstein, who proposed special relativity in 1905. Time, from the point of view of a stationary observer, depends on how close to the speed of light the object is moving. However, when a body is moving at speeds close to the speed of light ( relativistic speeds), time cannot be separated from the three dimensions of space. In classical mechanics, the use of spacetime is optional, as time is independent of motion in the three dimensions of Euclidean space. The white lines on the picture on the right represent the effect of mass on space-time. This results in a curved shape of space-time which can be understood as gravity.
